The Enterprise State Boll Weevils baseball team landed another local star as New Brockton pitcher Drew Cashin signed his letter-of-intent with the school on Dec. 13.

Cashin chose ESCC over interest from various other junior college programs and Huntingdon College. The senior pitcher is also an Elite 11 linebacker on the football team but said that playing college baseball has always been his dream.

“It’s a blessing. I’ve always had the dream to play college baseball,” Cashin said. “For that to happen is just a blessing and I thank God for that and my teammates and coaches that have coached me.”

Cashin said the ESCC campus is less than a 10-mile drive from his home, which played a part in his decision to become a Boll Weevil.

“They were giving me the best opportunity to pursue my goals and dreams,” Cashin said. “I’ll be able to pitch and play the field there. It’s right at home, it’s a six-mile commute for me. So, I just felt like it was the best fit.”

Cashin signed with ESCC despite a serious arm injury his junior season and the fact that he has had three different baseball coaches in the last three years.

“Each coach has a different process, they want things to be done their way,” he said. “As a player, I just want to hop on board and do my part but when there is change like that it kind of gets frustrating.

“You just want to continue that same process, especially if it works. I’m glad (New Brockton) Coach (Ben) Thompson is here, though. He does a great job and I’m very thankful he came to New Brockton for my last year.”

Going into his senior campaign, Cashin said his mentality is what makes him stand out.

“I don’t throw it harder than most and my off-speed (pitch) isn’t the best but I have a bulldog mentality on the mound,” he said. “I don’t care if it’s Juan Soto or a kid in the (batter’s) box, I’m going to throw it right by you. That’s just my mentality and I think that’s where it starts for me.”

Cashin said he’s ready to prove that he’s been underrated during his high school career.

“I want to make my name known,” he emphasized. “I feel like I’m a little bit under the radar and I can do some serious damage this year in (Class) 3A. I’m the best I’ve been this year and I’m super excited.”
