As Coffee County Family Services is in the midst of its annual bike drive heading into Christmas, a group of local youth baseball teams came together to donate 19 bicycles for the drive.
The youth teams presented the bicycles to Coffee County Family Services Director Judy Crowley last week.
“We just decided we were going to try and do some different community service projects and we just thought this would be a good project for us to be able to give back to the community,” Diamond Athletics coach Jake Vest said. “It feels good. Some of the kids don’t realize how privileged they are and how not so privileged some other kids are. It’s just really amazing to see it come together.”
Vest, his coaches, his players and the parents helped get the donations for the 19 bicycles that will be a part of the biggest bike drive Coffee County Family Services has enjoyed thus far.
“This is the most we’ve ever had and the most kids we’ve ever had, too,” Crowley said. “There are a lot of children that are going to have a much better Christmas because of things like this and bicycles are really important to kids.”
Coffee County Commissioner Jim Thompson, who is helping with the bike drive, said that it’s important to understand how important Coffee County Services is to the community.
“Coffee County Family Services is so valuable to Coffee County,” Thompson emphasized. “They are amazing. It will really do your heart good to come out and see the happiness and joy on people’s faces they are creating.”
Coffee County Family Services has had more than 300 bicycles donated this year. In a world where it’s implied that most people are selfish these days, Crowley says she knows that’s not true.
“I don’t believe people are selfish, I don’t believe that at all,” she said. “Folks want to make sure children are taken care of and that’s my whole business.
“It’s been a hard couple of years for everybody and kids do need to have some fun and get out of the house. They’ve been inside too long and this bike drive is more important this year than any year I’ve been a part of.”
