The Daleville Department of Public Safety Director has resigned.
In a Facebook post March 16 Allen Medley announced that he is resigning from the position that he has held for three years.
“So as everyone knows by now, I have decided to turn (in) my resignation with the Daleville Department of Public Safety,” Medley wrote in his on-line post. “I feel that this is the best thing to do for me and my family.”
In his post, Medley thanked fellow law officers for their support. “I also want to thank everyone for the support you have given over the past three years. To the citizens of Daleville, thank you.”
Medley has served as Daleville’s police chief since being sworn in to office at the Daleville City Council meeting May 21, 2019. He had served as interim police chief since April 1, 2019.
Medley served five years as the Daleville City Schools School Resource Officer. Before he served as an SRO, he had about 25 years in law enforcement, working in Daleville, Slocomb and Geneva.
Medley also served in the Alabama National Guard for six years and performed gate guard duty at Fort Rucker during his service after Sept. 11, 2001.
Medley’s resignation comes on the heels of a still-ongoing investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation into allegations of the use of excessive force by DPS officers against an inmate who was in the Daleville City Jail Jail following his arrest.
Two officers “are no longer employed” with the Daleville DPS and one has returned to duty, Medley said at the conclusion of an internal investigation March 10. “Our internal affairs committee probed three officers, all of who were placed on administrative leave while the investigation was in progress.
“With the closing of our investigation into this incident, two of the three officers are no longer employed with this department and one has returned to full duty,” Medley said March 10. “The names of the officers involved will not be released because the State Bureau of Investigation has not closed this case.”
Daleville Mayor Jayme Stayton said he declines comment on Medley’s resignation pending completion of the SBI’s investigation. “When the investigation is over and the results are public, I will be happy to comment on this situation,” he said.
