Mykel Johnson

Mykel Johnson runs the ball last week at spring practice while the Wildcats were still in shells.

The Enterprise High School Wildcat football team began spring practice on April 19 and will continue with practices twice weekly until May 12 when the Cats will hold a Blue and White intrasquad game.

First year head coach Ben Blackmon has his hands full learning what his players are capable of and finding a quarterback. He said the biggest change is the style of play, both offensively and defensively, from last year.

“We’re having to find a quarterback because coming in, for the first time in 22 years, I’ve never gone somewhere and they didn’t have quarterbacks. We’re having to build that,” Blackmon said.

Competing at quarterback in the offseason have been Aiden White, who played receiver and corner last year; Jackson Bailey; Warren Axton; and Dalton Owens.

Cole Weeks is coaching the quarterbacks while Blackmon is coaching the running backs.

During the offseason a QB Academy was held at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for part of the winter to work with the quarterback candidates.

Enterprise will run the spread offense with some options but Blackmon said they will run the football first and have an RPO-type offense.

As far as standouts on offense, defense and special teams, Blackmon said the good thing is they don’t know anybody.

“Going into spring training, all we know is the work ethic you’ve put in to get to that point,” Blackmon said.

He believes the two returning safeties, Keion Dunlap and Eric Winters, are SEC caliber players down the road.

“Spring is a developmental thing, a time to work on yourself,” Blackmon said. “Over the years I’ve found we get a lot further along if we focus on us. We need to focus on the little fundamental things.”
