Doing the right thing. Your word is your bond. Surround yourself with people who are good.
Those are words of advice that Level Plains Police Chief Johnny Summers and Sgt. Mikki Welch shared with children attending an after school program in Ozark.
“When you lose everything in this world, all you’ve got left is your word,” Summers told the children attending All of God’s Children Enrichment Center during a visit March 9. “Your word is your bond.”
“That is true,” Welch said, also stressing the importance of knowing one’s address and adult contact information. “If you don’t that that information, it’s something you need to learn.
“Don’t take anything from strangers,” Welch added. “Don’t keep secrets from your parents. Don’t leave your house without an adult knowing about it.”
Both officers stressed the importance of making good decisions. “People want to be good but when they surround themselves with people that are not good most of the time, peer pressure wins and people get in situations where they do things that they really don’t want to do,” Welch said.
Summers agreed. “The most important thing you can do is surround yourself with people who are good. That is all I ever preach to my guys. Do the right thing, do what you are supposed to do and you won’t have to worry about looking over your shoulders,” he said.
“Judge each person as an individual, give each person an opportunity. Bullies are cowards,” Summer said. “If you see someone being bullied and you don’t say something, that makes you just as bad as the person being bullied. You have to have the courage to do the right thing.
“Take care of yourself mentally as well as physically,” Summers advised. “If you want something in life, go after it. Don’t let somebody tell you you can’t do something.
“Do what you’re supposed to do, treat everybody the way you want to be treated and just do what’s right,” Summers added. “And if you live that way, everything else will fall into place.”
