The New Brockton Lady Gamecocks earned their first Class 3A playoff wins in school history at the Class 3A South Regional Softball Tournament in Gulf Shores this weekend before being eliminated.
New Brockton earned a 9-7 win in the opening round of the the double-elimination tournament on May 14 against TR Miller.
The Lady Gamecocks were lifted by a huge seventh inning as New Brockton went into the inning tied 4-4 with TR Miller. Kiersten Sunday, Lizzy Everts, Jordyn Thornton, McKenlie Jerkins and Kennedy Hussey all scored in the top of the seventh to put New Brockton ahead 9-4.
TR Miller managed to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh but the lead was too big and New Brockton held on for the first Class 3A playoff win in school history.
Thornton led New Brockton offensively going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Sunday, Jerkins and Hussey scored two runs, while Everts and Madison Meeks scored one run each.
Jerkins pitched five innings and gave up six hits with four runs, while striking out one batter. Bailey Blackmon also pitched two innings and gave up five hits and three runs.
In the second round, New Brockton fell to Mobile-Christian 12-2 as Mobile scored nine runs in the first three innings. Hussey went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Everts went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Sunday went 2-for-3 with a run. Megan Eldridge scored the only other run of the game for the Lady Gamecocks.
Jerkins pitched four innings and struck out two batters, while giving up 10 hits and 10 runs with a homer. Harley Chin pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up one hit and one run, while Blackmon gave up one hit and one run in 1/3 of an inning.
The Lady Gamecocks bounced back with an 11-8 win over Flomaton on May 15 to stay alive in the tournament. Megan Eldridge went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs, while Hussey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Thornton scored three runs in the win, while Radcliffe scored two runs. Sunday, Everts and Jerkins scored one run each.
Blackmon pitched four innings and gave up five hits and two runs, while striking out one batter. Jerkins pitched three innings and gave up five hits and six runs with one strikeout.
Later in the day New Brockton fell to Opp 9-6 and was eliminated from the tournament. New Brockton trailed 9-2 going into the seventh inning. The Lady Gamecocks scored four runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 9-6 but couldn’t get any closer.
Hussey had a big day going 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Meeks went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run. Thornton also went 2-for-4 with a run. Jerkins scored two runs, while Eldridge and Sunday scored one run each.
Jerkins pitched five innings and gave up eight hits and five runs, while Blackmon gave up three hits and five runs with one strikeout in two innings in the circle.
