When the Enterprise Wildcats made the Final Four this season it was the first time in 63 years the school had made a basketball Final Four and just the second time in school history.
That last – and only other team – to make the Final Four was the 1958 squad, the first team in school history to ever make it that far. The 1958 Wildcats were coached by Harvey Murphy and led by a squad that featured Robert Arnette, Ned Harbuck, Donnie Helms, Bobby Batson, Dickie Mullins, Byron Nichols, Ross Cotter and Buryl McWaters.
The 1958 team boasted the best record in the entire state – at 27-3 – coming into the state tournament held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Enterprise would lose in the semifinals to eventual state champion Fayette in overtime. In the consolation game, Harbuck broke the all-time state field goal record leading Enterprise to a third place finish over Murphy. Harbuck, Mullins and Nichols all earned all-tournament honors, as well. Harbuck also earned Birmingham Post Herald All-State honors, as well.
During the season, Enterprise won the Hartford Invitational before also capturing the SAC Tournament and the District II Championship.
Murphy would go on to become the first head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in 1965.
