Dear Editor:

Here we go again…

I recall the “zombie apocalypse” COVID predictions last year (which were wrong). We locked down to “slow the spread” and allow us to get ready for the flood of expected hospitalizations. The height of flu season in January logged us 3,000 hospitalizations across the entire state. As of this writing, we are at 66 percent of that number. So if a bed shortage exists today, it’s due to sheer incompetence by our medical establishment.

We have spent billions of dollars on COVID mitigation in the last 18 months. And yet, when I checked the numbers in Jefferson County— Alabama’s largest metropolitan area—hospitals increased their bed capacity just 5 percent from July 2020 to July 2021. Either this is a sign of gross incompetence and waste, or our medical professionals don’t believe their own rhetoric.

We have been at war with this virus for a while now. As far as deaths are concerned, we are way down. This time last year, we were averaging 47 deaths per day. We’re currently in the middle of a “massive surge” and we’re at seven deaths per day. Meanwhile, the Obama’s recently danced the night away with hundreds of their closest friends (unmasked) at their $12 million waterfront estate in Martha’s Vineyard. Think about that as your five year old is sent masked to kindergarten in Enterprise. So much for us all being “in this together.”

Friends, this sad chapter in our history ends when we say it ends.
