The Coffee County Commission unanimously approved the county transportation plan for fiscal year 2022 at the Aug. 9 meeting.
County engineer Marty Lentz said that the state requires the plan to be approved before the end of August as a part of the Rebuild Alabama project that gives local municipalities funds for improving roads.
Coffee County’s plan will feature the resurfacing and traffic striping of 12.78 miles of county roads. Those roads include resurfacing of 3.92 miles at County Road 105 to County Road 110 at an estimated cost of $375,000. Resurfacing of 3.66 miles of County Road 375 to Highway 84 will cost $460,000. The cost of resurfacing 1.84 miles of road from County Road 410 to State Road 87 will total $168,000.
The resurfacing of 3.36 miles of State Road 51 to County Road 114 will cost a total of $550,000 with $400,000 of it being paid for with Rebuild Alabama funds and the other $150,000 coming from local funds.
The commission also approved a loan for the purchase of a dozier for the Coffee County Landfill. The loan will hold a 1.25 percent interest rate and will be through Syncrony Bank. The commission also approved the purchase of new computer software and project management tools for the highway department.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (DOT) requested a “quitclaim” from the county for a portion of the right away at the intersection of County Road 461 with Highway 134 in the Ino Community as a part of the Alabama DOT’s Highway Safety Improvement project at the intersection. The commission approved the signing of the quitclaim to allow the state to finish its improvements at the intersection.
The highway department also requested permission to send out annual bids for various materials, which was approved.
An estate planning workshop will be held on Aug. 12-13 via Zoom. The Aug. 12 workshop is free and the Aug. 13 workshop – which is for landowners – is $10. The county will also be holding Serv Safe training at the county complex Aug. 24-25.
