The Daleville City Board of Education approved a pay increase for those who substitute teach.
At the DBOE meeting Nov. 17, the board unanimously approved a recommendation of Daleville Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Stamps to increase the pay for substitute teachers, who are obtained through Kelly Service’s Educational Staffing.
Stamps said she and the schools Chief Financial Officer Jessica Anderson had conducted a comparison survey of area school systems and determined that the Daleville substitute pay rate was less than that provided by other school systems in the area.
“We had had such an issue getting and keeping subs, that we felt like we needed to go up on pay,” Stamps said.
“We’ve got to stay competitive or we won’t get substitutes,” agreed DBOE member Johnny Buchannan.
The new pay rate for a substitute teacher will increase from $62.50 a day to $72 a day. The rate for a certified substitute teacher will go from $67.50 a day to $90 a day. The rate for a certified long term substitute day will go from $110 a day to $125 a day.
In other business, Stamps read a proclamation signed by the board of education recognizing “Thank Alabama Teachers Week.”
Stamps said that Gov. Key Ivey issued a resolution proclaiming “Thank Alabama Teachers Week” last year, the first year of COVID. “And she did again this year,” Stamps said, reading the proclamation which declares the board’s “sincere appreciation and gratitude for the work and efforts of all personnel and employees of the Daleville City Schools on a day-to-day basis as they strive to educate and equip the future citizens of our great city.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the teachers, administrators, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, support personnel and employees of the Daleville City School System continue to work tirelessly and with great conviction to ensure that our city’s children are healthy while continuing to gain the knowledge and skills they need to be successful and goes over and beyond the call of duty in these unprecedented times in order to provide the students of our city with reliable access to a high quality education,” the resolution reads.
The next meeting of the Daleville Board of Education is Dec. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the DCS Central Office. The meeting is open to the public.
