The Daleville Warhawks (0-2, 0-0) have wet to find a win in the 2021 season but they will look to change that and start building confidence in their young team this Friday, Sept. 3, against Class 3A, Region 2 foe Houston Academy Raiders (1-1, 0-0) on the road.
Last season, Houston Academy defeated Daleville 45-20 but the Warhawks put up the biggest production output of the season that night and head coach Will Garner said that building confidence is the upmost importance.
“Confidence is a huge thing for our young group,” Garner emphasized. “It comes and goes right now in spurts, we’ll have success at times and you can see it in their eyes that, ‘Man, we can really do this’, and then at other times they revert back to not feeling sure of themselves.
“Hopefully we can build some more confidence this week and then continue building on that this Friday night.”
The Warhawk defense struggled to tackle in space against Dale County and the Raiders will surely have seen that and look to exploit that with their “spread” offense.
“Houston Academy is a good football team,” Garner flatly said. “They will spread it around, they have a young quarterback that can really throw it and a couple of really good receivers.
“They are going to be a good football team and if we aren’t on our game they can definitely score a lot of points.”
While the Warhakws have struggled at times they’ve also had chances to have even more success early this season and mistakes have hindered that. Garner said that Daelville has to begin eliminating those mistakes to find more success.
“We have to put our best foot forward this week and be able to control the football and fix some things on defense to give us a chance to win on Friday,” Garner said. “If we do those things and control the things we can control, we’ll have a chance to win and that’s exciting.”
