New Brockton baseball started the 2022 season on a high note with three straight wins over Luverne, Houston County and Northside Methodist.

The Gamecocks defeated Northside Methodist 7-3 in the second game of a double header Saturday, Feb. 19.

Colton McClenny got New Brockton going in the top of the second inning with a run, scoring on a wild pitch. McClenny had led the inning off on a walk and had advanced after an error and a single by Riley Simmons. Northside Methodist went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second after two walks and an error allowed the runners to score.

New Brockton went back ahead in the top of the third. Brayson Carr led off the inning with a single and advanced to second after Kaden Cupp put down a sacrifice bunt. Drew Cashin doubled to bring him home and tie the score 2-2. Payton Green followed with a single to score Cashin and the Gamecocks took the lead back 3-2.

New Brockton scored another run in the top of the fourth and three more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win.

Cupp was the winning pitcher for the Gamecocks going three and a third innings, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out five. Carr and White came out of the bullpen to help close out the game in relief.

New Brockton had 10 hits on the day. Green went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Carr and Cupp both went 2-for-3 and each had one RBI and one run scored. Cashin went 1-for-3 with a double and scored two runs.

New Brockton 23, Houston County 0

New Brockton dominated Houston County 23-0 Saturday, Feb. 19, with four pitchers combining to throw a shutout.

Green led off the Gamecocks on the mound for one inning followed by Josh Gutierrez for one inning, Jaxon Whitworth for two innings and Simmons ending the game on the mound for one inning. All four pitchers combined for eight strikeouts, no walks and gave up one hit.

Whitworth led New Brockton to the win going 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in eight runs. He had a triple in the first, single and a walk in the second and a single in the third.

The Gamecocks scored 12 runs in the second inning to put the game away. Green, Gabe Herrington, Dawson Peacock, Whitworth and Hayden Pope all had RBIs in the inning.

New Brockton scored five more runs in the top of the third and the game was called after Houston County failed to plate any runs in the bottom of the inning. The Gamecocks had 14 hits in the game.

New Brockton 15, Luverne 3

The Gamecocks opened the season with a 15-3 shellacking of Luverne on Feb. 17. Cashin helped lead New Brockton by driving in runs on a single in the first and a home run in the second. He was 3-3 at the plate including a double with 4 RBIs.

New Brockton plated five runs in the fourth inning to break things wide open and take a 7-2 lead. The offensive onslaught came from walks by Lawson and Peacock, a single by Ray, a groundout by Herrington and a fielder’s choice by McClenny. The Gamecocks added eight more runs in the third and fourth to have the game called after Luverne batted in the top of the fifth. New Brockton had eight hits in the game.

Cashin was credited with the victory as well, pitching three innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out 9. White and Carr entered the game out of the bullpen and helped close the game in relief.
