The Enterprise boys golf team competed in the Joe King Memorial Golf Tournament played at the Auburn University Club on Monday, March 7, and finished fifth in a field of 15 schools. The second round of the tournament was cancelled due to heavy rains making the course unplayable.
Gibson Charlton shot a 73 and made All-Tournament. Jon Ed Steed shot a 75, Jackson Bailey shot a 76, Nick Cook shot an 83 and Hunter McCarty shot an 83.
“It was another good golf outing for the Cats in very windy conditions on Monday. Gibson Charlton has returned to form and Jon Ed Steed played his usual quality game. Jackson Bailey fired his lowest round of the season which was needed to help with the team score. I am confident that as the season progresses we will get all our scores in the 70s,” said golf coach Rex Bynum.
Vestavia Hills finished in first place with a 294, Mountain Brook finished second with a 295, UMS-Wright finished third with a 306, Auburn finished fourth with a 306 and Enterprise finished fifth with a 307.
At the two-day David Miller Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by UMS-Wright High School played on the Dogwood Course at Lakewood Golf Club in Point Clear Tuesday, Feb. 22, Enterprise placed fifth in a field of 16.
Steed finished with a 74-75-149 to place ninth in the individuals. Cook shot a 78-76-154; Bailey shot a 79-85-164, Charlton finished with an 82-83-165 and McCarty shot a 87-83-170.
The Cats finished at plus 54 for the two days to finish fifth. Mountain Brook was first, Auburn was second, Vestavia Hills was third and Fairhope was fourth.
“I was not pleased and I believe the players were not too happy with our performance,” said golf coach Rex Bynum. “Jon Ed was the lone player that played steady golf and even he can play much better.”
The golf team participated in the Patriot Open High School golf tournament played at the North River Golf Course in Tuscaloosa and hosted by American Christian Academy on Feb. 28 and March 1.
The Cats finished sixth out of 17 teams. The top six teams were Mountain Brook who shot 580, UMS-Wright with a 592, Vestavia Hills with a 596, Auburn and Homewood with a 601 each and Enterprise with a 612.
Steed finished with a 69-69-138, was tournament medalist and made the all-tournament team. Charlton shot a 76-75-151, Cook shot an 83-76-159, Bailey had an 81-83-164 and McCarty finished with a 96-93-189.
“We had great play from Jon Ed Steed with a pair of 69s to win the Patriot Open,” said Bynum. “He may be the best high school golfer in the state and he’s only a freshman. Gibson and Nick are close to form.”
