Drew Cashin didn’t allow a single run as New Brockton defeated Geneva County 6-0 on March 7.
New Brockton scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Kaden Cupp started the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second and third. He scored on a wild pitch to put the Gamecocks up by a run.
Jaxon Whitworth led off the top of the fourth with a single on a ground ball to second. He stole second then advanced to third on an error and scored on the same error to increase the lead to 2-0. Payton Green was hit by a pitch, Colton McClenny hit into a fielder’s choice and Gabe Herrington walked to load the bases. Riley Simmons then drew a walk to score another runner and the Gamecocks led 3-0.
In the top of the seventh, Cupp reached on an error after hitting a ground ball and was picked off at second trying to steal. Cashin singled on a line drive to left field and was replaced by pinch runner Hayden Pope. Green hit a pop fly and reached on an error, however, Pope managed to score. McClenny walked and was followed by Josh Gutierrez reaching on an error after he hit a ground ball and allowing Green to score. Gabe Herrington then hit a line-drive single to center field to score McClenny before the Gamecocks closed out the inning with a 6-0 lead.
Cashin earned the victory on the mound going the distance with no runs scored on one hit while striking out 18.
Herrington and Bryson Carr led New Brockton at the plate with each going 2-for-3. Herrington earned 1 RBI. Cashin went 2-for-4 and Whitworth went 1-for-4 scoring one run.
New Brockton had seven hits to one for Geneva County. The Bulldogs committed five errors in the game.
New Brockton 11, Slocomb 8
The Slocomb bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Red Tops scored seven runs but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Gamecocks as New Brockton won 11-8 on March 8.
New Brockton started the top of the first inning with a walk to Cupp who was caught stealing. Cashin then walked and stole second before Whitworth drew a walk. With two outs, McClenny walked to load the bases and Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to drive the first run in and the Gamecocks led 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, Gutierrez bunted into a fielder’s choice and scored when Gabe Herrington doubled on a line drive to right field. Alex Graham relieved Herrington as a pinch runner and scored after advancing on a wild pitch then a fielder’s choice on a grounder by Riley Simmons. With two outs on the board, Cupp singled on a hard ground ball to the shortstop, Cashin walked to load the bases and Whitworth walked to score another run. New Brockton then led 4-0.
New Brockton put four more runs on the board before Slocomb could manage to score a run and make the score 8-1. The Gamecocks scored three more runs in the top of the seventh before the onslaught by the Red Top scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Cupp started the game on the rubber for the Gamecocks pitching six innings and giving up one run on two hits with nine strikeouts. Carr relieved him in the seventh giving up six runs on two hits before Green came out of the bullpen to finish the game. He gave up one run on two hits.
Cupp led the Gamecocks at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and scoring two runs with 2 RBIs. Cashin went 1-for-1 with a double scoring two runs. McClenny went 1-for-2 scoring a run. Carr went 1-for-3 scoring two runs while Green and Herrington both went 1-for-4 with two RBIs each. Herrington also had a double.
New Brockton had eight hits in the game to Slocomb’s six. Both teams had two errors.
