The New Brockton Lady Gamecocks opened the 2022 varsity softball season with five games in two days with the first game on Friday, Feb. 18 against Auburn. The Lady Gamecocks fell 11-7 despite outhitting Auburn 10-8 in the high scoring affair.

Auburn scored nine runs in the first five innings but New Brockton came back scoring six runs of their own. The Lady Tigers plated two more runs in the top of the sixth but New Brockton just couldn’t put more than one run on the board to finish out the game.

Madison Meeks led the Lady Gamecocks at the plate going 3-for-4 scoring one run and one RBI. Kinsley Owens went 2-for-3 scoring one run and Jordyn Thornton went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lizzy Everts, Meeks, Owens and Thornton all had doubles in the game.

Thornton took the loss on the mound pitching all six innings. She gave up eight hits and 11 runs but struck out seven.

Athens 14, New Brockton 0

New Brockton played the second game of a double header on Friday and came up short 14-0 to Athens after the game was called in three innings. Athens outhit the Lady Gamecocks 10-1.

Kennedy Hussey took the loss for New Brockton pitching two-thirds of an inning giving up five hits and nine runs. Kallie Qualls came out of the bullpen to pitch one and one-third inning also giving up five hits and five runs.

Elmore County 13, New Brockton 5

New Brockton struggled to get its offense going on Saturday, Feb. 19, and fell to Elmore County 13-5.

The Lady Gamecocks scored in the top of the first inning but Elmore County plated 11 runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away for good. New Brockton managed to score two more runs in the top of the third and fourth innings but Elmore County put a run on the board in each of those innings to win after five innings.

Kierstin Sunday hit a double in the game with Hussey, Thornton, Meeks, Megan Eldridge and Owens each having a single. New Brockton had six hits in the game.

Thornton took the loss for New Brockton pitching one and two-thirds innings, giving up six hits and 11 runs. Qualls came on to finish the game pitching two and one-third innings, giving up three hits and two runs. Elmore County outhit New Brockton 9-6.

Austin 7, New Brockton 6

New Brockton fought back after falling behind by six runs in the third inning but the comeback fell short in a 7-6 loss to Austin Saturday, Feb. 19. The Lady Gamecocks outhit Austin 7 to 5.

New Brockton scored five runs in the fifth inning and trailed by one run but just couldn’t plate any more runs in the sixth.

Sunday led the Lady Gamecocks at the plate going 2-for-2 with a double scoring one run and one RBI. Owens went 1-for-3 scoring one run and 2 RBIs.

Sunday also took the loss for New Brockton pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four hits and seven runs while striking out five. Hussey and Qualls pitched the final two innings allowing only one hit and no runs.

Central 18, New Brockton 2

The Lady Gamecocks had trouble keeping up with Central in an 18-2 loss in the final game of a triple header Saturday, Feb. 19.

Central scored four runs in the top of the first inning, seven in the second and seven in the third as they outhit the Lady Gamecocks 15-4.

Owens, Hussey, Sunday and Eldridge all had singles for New Brockton.

Qualls took the loss for the Lady Gamecocks. She pitched one inning giving up nine hits and eight runs.

Sunday came out of the bullpen to pitch one inning and gave up four hits and seven runs.

Hussey closed out the game giving up two hits and three runs.
