For the second time in three years the Enterprise High School golf team has earned a state runner-up trophy as the EHS boys team finished second at the AHSAA Class 7A Golf State Championship Tournament in Mobile on May 11.
The 2019 Lady Cats also finished runner-up at the girls state tournament.
EHS finished with a score of 298 just two strokes behind state champion Vestavia Hills – who shot 296 – to finish in second place. Hewitt-Trussville finished in third shooting 299 and Auburn came in fourth with a score of 300. Those were scores after the first day and EHS thought it would have a second chance to take over the No. 1 spot on day two but bad weather rained it out leading to Vestavia Hills being named state champion.
Individually EHS eighth grader Jon Ed Steed shot a 70, which put him as runner-up for top individual score, as well. Senior Brady Wood and sophomore Gibby Charlton both shot 75 and sophomore Nick Cook shot 78. In a non-counting score sophomore Jackson Bailey shot an 82.
“I am so proud of this team,” Enterprise coach Rex Bynum excitedly said. “They were on a mission from the start of the season and came within three strokes of accomplishing that mission.
“I believe these guys would have won if they could have played the second round. They got the red runner-up trophy this time. They want the blue championship trophy next time.”
The EHS boys golf team is the third EHS athletic program this season to finish as state runner-up along with the boys basketball and girls soccer teams. EHS wrestler Evelyn Holmes-Smith also won a state championship in girls wrestling this athletic year. EHS track runner Aniyah Kitt also won a state championship this season.
Additionally, the Elba boys golf team won the Class 1A-2A State Championship with a score of 313, edging past Brantley who shot 320. Elba’s John Martin Wilson was the low medalist for Class 1A/2A with a score of 70.
