The New Brockton Gamecocks baseball team picked up a win over county rival Zion Chapel at home on March 19 by a score of 8-3 as pitcher Drew Cashin struck out 17 batters along the way.
Kaden Cupp, Cashin, Colton McClenny, Brayson Carr, Jackson Lawson and Josh Gutierrez each had one hit in the win. Peyton Green, Lawson and Riley Simmons scored two runs each, while Cupp and Cashin scored one run each.
Cashin pitched all seven innings and mowed down 17 batters in the win. He gave up just one hit and three runs in his time on the mound. Of Cashin’s 113 total pitches, 79 were strikes. All but one of the runs Zion Chapel scored came on errors.
The Gamecocks followed up with a 7-6 loss to Zion Chapel on the road on March 22. After New Brockton went up 2-0 in the first inning, the Rebels tied things up 2-2 in the second inning. Both sides score one run each in the third inning and then New Brockton jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Zion Chapel scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and another run in the sixth inning to take control of the game 7-4, however. In the seventh inning, Cashin drilled a single to shortstop that drove Cupp home to cut the lead to 7-5. Cashin would then later score on a ground ball from Herrington to put New Brockton within one. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, that was as close as they would get as the Rebels secured the 7-6 win.
Cashin went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs, while Cupp scored four runs.
Carr pitched four innings and struck out six batters with six hits and four runs given up. Cupp also pitched two innings and struck out three batters, while allowing one hit and three runs. McClenny earned a double play on the defensive end, as well.
New Brockton travels to Goshen for a doubleheader this Friday, March 26.
