For the first time since 2017 the Troy Lady Trojans (22-5) are headed to the “big dance” as they earned a spot in the NCAA Basketball Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Championship in Pensacola, Fla., over Louisiana.
Troy earned a bye – as the No. 2 seed in the tournament – in the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament before knocking off Texas State 103-90 in the quarterfinals and then beating Appalachian State 66-63 in the semifinals. In the Sun Belt Championship on March 8, Troy defeated the No. 1 seeded Louisiana 73-65 to capture the third Sun Belt Championship under head coach Chanda Rigby and fourth NCAA Tournament appearance.
Troy never trailed against Louisiana in the championship game and was led by Jasmine Robinson with 17 points and nine assists, while Felmas Koranga earned a double-double with 12 points and 22 rebounds. Alexus Dye also earned a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Tiyah Johnson also scored 11 points.
Dye has earned 22 double-doubles this season, which leads the NCAA, while Koranga has also had 11 double-doubles.
The men’s team didn’t fare as well as Troy saw its 2020-2021 season come to a close with an 86-68 loss to Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinals. Troy defeated UT-Arlington 91-86 in the opening round.
Against Coastal Carolina, Zay Williams led Troy with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Duke Miles scored 14 points and dished five assists.
