The Wiregrass Canoe and Kayak Club, the Alabama Scenic River Trail chapter affiliate in Southeast Alabama, will hold a meeting to obtain input from paddlers and do some planning for 2022 floats and other activities. The meeting is March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Michaels Episcopal Church on Camilla Avenue in Ozark just east of the Wal-Mart, off of U.S. 231.
The meeting will include a potluck meal and is open to the public. Participants are asked to respect the health concerns of others and that those not fully vaccinated and boosted, or vaccinated and recovered, bring and wear masks when not eating or drinking and that persons with any recognized symptoms including cough or fever decline this invitation and come to a later meeting.
So that adequate preparations can be made for drinks, plates and utensils, please use the event notice post on the Wiregrass Canoe and Kayak Club to indicate your attendance or send an e-mail to [email protected] by Friday, Feb. 25.
In addition to planning paddling trips for members and guests, the club, alone and in conjunction with the ASRT and other partners, works to improve access, create safer paddling, promote paddling and other water recreation and protect water quality and streams and rivers. Like the ASRT the club hopes to aid economic development in river towns and the watershed.
The club expects to have one or more guest speakers at the meeting including representatives from the Alabama Scenic River Trail, the Choctawhatchee Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority, outfitters, persons who have floated and filmed long-distance floats of the river and Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper. Items likely to be discussed at the meeting include:
• Filling the vacant Southeast Alabama Scenic River Trail Representative position;
• Wiregrass Canoe & Kayak Club Organization – informal versus incorporation
• Local float trips;
• Float trips outside the area, such as a rafting trip on the Chattahoochee in Columbus, Ga.;
• Special events such as a celebratory float(s) on the Pea River Dam removal, kayak race(s) in conjunction with the Festival on the Rivers, cleanup(s) and educational float(s) about geology and history of the river;
• Kayak training, local and away;
• Water quality monitoring training;
• Setting monthly meeting dates and location(s) for 2022;
• Possible speakers/presenters for monthly meetings; and,
• Any items related to kayaking that are submitted.
For questions, feel free to respond by submitting them on the Wiregrass Canoe and Kayak Facebook page, call or text (334) 807-1365 or email [email protected].
