Parts of Midland City Elementary School were damaged in a Friday night fire that started in the kindergarten section of the school located on Second Street.
“We are very thankful no one was hurt,” said Dale County Schools Superintendent Ben Baker. “We are thankful it was not during school hours and we are thankful for our first responders because we can rebuild a school building.”
No one was in the building during the fire that began at approximately 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25.
Baker credited Midland City Fire Chief Burt Chandler and his team for the fact that the fire was as contained as it was. “They got in, got the fire out and minimized the damage,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse because it was a Friday night and it could have burnt for a long time.
“The PreK classroom has extensive damage and is a total loss,” Baker said. “Three other classrooms have water and smoke damage.”
Baker reiterated his appreciation for response of Chandler and the Midland City Fire Department. “Their quick and professional response Friday night saved our school.”
Midland City Elementary School was closed Feb. 28 and March 1. All students with the exception of the PreK students, returned to school March 2. PreK will be closed all week, Baker said.
