Recently, a landowner’s tour was held at the property of Jim Ellis. The tour was sponsored by the Coffee County Forestry Advisory Committee in conjunction with the Alabama Forestry Commission. The property, located on County Road 153, was acquired in 1985 with a primary objective of habitat enhancement for wildlife and a secondary objective of sustainable timber production. The farm consists of 201 acres with over half of it intensively managed loblolly pine plantation. During the tour, several interesting subjects were discussed including Tract Management History, Portable Sawmill Demonstration, Understory Chemical Release, Predator Control and Management, and Thinning Timing and Regimes Q&A. In spite of the rainy weather, there was a great turnout with approximately 40 people attending. A special thank you to Alfa Insurance for providing lunch, porta potties, and a large tent.
