The Enterprise High School boys golf team won the Husky Invitational hosted by Helena High School and played at the Robert Trent Jones Oxmoor Valley Ridge course in Hoover on March 14. The Cats fired an even 300 to defeat 14 other schools. Hewett-Trussville came in second at 304. No other team was closer than 25 strokes to the top two.

Jon Ed Steed shot a 69 and was the medalist for the tournament. Gibson Charlton shot a 73 and was named all-tournament, Nick Cook shot a 76, Jackson Bailey and Hunter McCarty each shot an 82.

“I am so proud for this team to get their first tournament win of the season,” said coach Rex Bynum. “The team was one shot shy of breaking 300, but that will happen very soon.

“Jon Ed (Steed) fired his second 69 for the year and was medalist for the second time.  Gibby (Gibson Charlton) was solid again and Nick (Cook) bounced back from his last outing.  Jackson (Bailey) had three loose swings that cost him six strokes and Hunter(McCarty) had three penalty strokes to put him into the 80s,” Bynum said.

“The team is on track to have an outstanding season and I am just glad to be there to watch them play.”

On Tuesday, March 15, EHS won the Prattville High School Invitational played on the Robert Trent Jones Capital Hill course. The tournament was shortened to nine holes due to rain.

Enterprise won with a score of 151 to defeat 13 other teams. Auburn High School’s JV team finished second at 154 and Vestavia Hills High School JV team finished third at 156.

Cook and Steed both shot a 36, Charlton shot a 38, McCarty shot a 39 and Bailey shot a 40.

“The guys played well under tough conditions for golf.  It was raining and the wind was blowing, so to win against 13 other teams was very special,” said Bynum. “Our nine-hole score would equate to a 302 for 18 holes, so that is a good score.  Hunter McCarty has been improving each week as he has gotten more tournament experience.  Nick, Jon Ed and Gibby were solid as usual Jackson had one bad hole that put his score out of the 30s.

“This team has the talent to be very special,” said Bynum.

On March 21 and 22, the golf team participated in the Bradley Johnson Memorial Golf Tournament on the Founders Course at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Hoover and finished eighth out of 16 teams. Northridge defeated Vestavia Hills in a playoff with a 611 to win the tournament. Spain Park finished third with a 616, Mountain Brook finished fourth with a 619, Hewitt-Trussville finished fifth with a 624, Homewood finished sixth with a 624, Guntersville finished seventh with a 625 and Enterprise finished eighth with a 628.

Steed shot a 76-73 to tie for fifth, Bailey shot a 75-76 for 10th place, Charlton shot a 74-81, Cook shot an 87-86 and McCarty had to withdraw due to illness.

“It was a tough two-day tournament for the Cats. This was a difficult course and very windy conditions made our scores be higher than normal,” said Bynum. “Jon Ed played to his normal high standards and Jackson played his best two-round total since he has been on the five-man varsity team. Gibby had putting issues that can and will be resolved. Nick’s game was way off but he will bounce back as the second half of the season approaches.”

Hunter’s illness was unfortunate because his play had been trending in the right direction lately plus the team had to count the four scores played without a fifth score to drop.”
