On May 15, Troy punter Jack Martin announced that he was transferring to Alabama to finish his college career.
Martin – a Dothan native – a first-team All-Sun Belt punter in 2020 after averaging 46 yards per punt will add more depth to a group of punters that have struggled in recent years at Alabama.
Though the Crimson Tide punted just 32 total times in 2020, Alabama’s two punters combined to average just 38 yards per punt. Charlie Scott – the brother of former Alabama All-American and current NFL punter JK Scott – averaged 39 yards per punt, while freshman Sam Johnson averaged just 35 yards per punt. Alabama has averaged less than 40 yards per punt every year since JK Scott left the Crimson Tide in 2017.
Martin will come to Alabama as a sophomore and will be immediately eligible to play following the NCAA’s new rule that allows players to transfer one time with no penalty. Martin also handled kickoff duties for Alabama.
At Northview, Martin was a three-time Class 7A All-State selection who averaged 42 yards per punt and 39 of his 42 kickoffs that season were touchbacks. He had 23 touchbacks in 2019 at Troy and 19 in 2020 with 13 of his 25 punts being downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
