The Troy Lady Trojans traveled to Starkville, Miss. last week to compete in the Mississippi State multi-team event (MTE) and came away with a perfect 3-0 record at the event.

Troy earned a 77-65 win over the SEC’s Mississippi State on Dec. 18, a resounding 94-51 in over South Carolina State at Dec. 19 and a 99-82 win over Jackson State on Dec. 20.

The win over Mississippi State was Troy’s first win over a Power-5 school since 2018 and was the result of a wild fourth quarter comeback. Troy trailed 51-48 going into the final period but captured the win after outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 25-15 in the fourth quarter. Troy finished off the last three minutes with a 10-4 run.

Felmas Koranga had a huge night with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Amber Leggett and Tina Stephens both added double-doubles. Leggett scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Stephens scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Lady Trojans left no doubt against South Carolina State dominating each and every quarter, including a 28-4 third quarter. Leggett led Troy with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Jhileiya Dunlap scored 12 points, blocked three shots and earned four steals. Za’Nautica Downs scored 12 points and Gabbi Cartagena scored 10 points.

In their final game in the Mississippi State MTE, the Lady Trojans trailed by 24 points at one point against Jackson State and were down 47-34 at halftime. Troy then exploded to outscore Jackson State 39-18 in the third quarter to take a 73-65 lead into the final period. Troy also outscored Jackson State 26-17 in the final period.

Koranga led Troy with 22 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals and three blocks, while Leggett had another big night with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sharonica Hartsfield and Downs scored 17 points each, while Tiyah Johnson scored 12 points and Stephens scored 10 points.

“This game will forever be in my memory as one of the special ones,” Troy coach Chanda Rigby said of the Jackson State win. “I’ve coached a lot of players with a lot of heart, but I’ve never really witnessed the level of determination our Trojans displayed today.

“At one point they scored 15 points in 1:47 of playing time. They went from down 24 points to up 17 points. That’s determination. That’s the heart of a Trojan Warrior.”

Leggett earned Sun Belt Player of the Week for her performances in the MTE. Leggett averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds during the weekend.

The Lady Trojans are back at home on Dec. 30 against Coastal Carolina as Sun Belt action begins. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
