The Class 7A No. 7-ranked Enterprise Wildcats jumpstarted area play last week with a 70-64 win over the No. 10-ranked Jeff Davis Volunteers on the road on Jan. 5.
Enterprise jumped out to an early 16-13 lead and took a 35-30 lead into halftime before stretching that lead to 51-41 going into the final period.
Jeff Davis managed to outscore Enterprise 23-19 in the final period but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats held on to start area play off with a win.
Enterprise shot 47 percent from the field and held Jeff Davis to 40 percent from the field. The Wildcats also outrebounded the Vols 49-32 and forced 15 turnovers. Enterprise also turned the ball over 19 times but the biggest difference being that the Wildcats scored 17 points off Jeff Davis’ 15 turnovers, while the Vols could turn Enterprise’s 19 turnovers into just 16 points. Enterprise also outscored Jeff Davis 50-34 in the paint.
Senior Elijah Terry had a big night against Jeff Davis with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Mykel Johnson scored a season-high 14 points and dished three assists. Senior Quentin Hayes also filled up the stat sheet with seven points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Sophomore Keion Dunlap scored eight points and senior Tomar Hobdy added seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Wildcats were scheduled to host their first area game on Jan. 6 against Dothan but the Wolves had COVID-19 issues inside their program forcing the game to be rescheduled. The two sides will now play Jan. 29 at Wildcat Arena.
Enterprise followed up with a home win over Jeff Davis – its second in the span of a week over the Vols – by a score of 75-58 on Jan. 11.
Enterprise opened up with a 19-10 lead in the first quarter and took a 28-19 lead into halftime. The Wildcats stretched that lead to 52-39 and eventually held on to the 75-58 win.
The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field, while Jeff Davis shot 44 percent in the game. Enterprise also outrebounded Jeff Davis 39-27 and outscored the Vols 54-42 in the paint.
Terry led Enterprise with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Ken Mitchell added 14 points and six rebounds. Jordan Hines chipped in with a season high 12 points and both Hayes and Hobdy added eight points each. Hobdy also dished four assists, grabbed three steals and earned five rebounds.
The girls, however, played their scheduled game with Enterprise knocking off Dothan 42-37 on Jan. 6 to pick up an area win. The Lady Cats and Lady Wolves slugged it out to a 12-12 tie in the first quarter but Enterprise managed to come away with a 22-20 lead going into halftime.
The two sides continued to battle back-and-forth in the third quarter with Enterprise leading 32-30 going into the final period where Enterprise managed to pull away slightly. The Lady Cats outscored Dothan 10-7 in the fourth quarter with some clutch free throws.
Dashia Nelson led Enterprise with 18 points and Jaida Gosha added 11 points in the win.
The Lady Cats followed up with a dominating 67-26 area win over the Jeff Davis Lady Vols on Jan. 11. Enterprise never trailed in the game and outscored Jeff Davis 11-3 in the first quarter, 19-4 in the second, 18-19 in the third and 19-9 in the fourth quarter dominated every minute of play.
Nelson led Enterprise with 16 points, while Gosha added 15points and Joye Anderson scored nine points.
Enterprise will host Greenville on Jan. 14.
