Joshua Russell Hegar Jr. was recently presented with Scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle Scout award, during a court-of-honor ceremony held on May 21. He is son of Col. Joshua R. Hegar and Leah Vickers Hegar of Enterprise and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 77, chartered by First Baptist Church of Enterprise.

A requirement to achieve the Eagle Scout rank is to plan, develop and complete a community service project where he provides leadership for the project from start to finish. For his service project, Russell designed and built a paved border around the Enterprise City Cemetery flag pole, in addition to a paved walkway leading to the flagpole, a raised flower bed around the pole, and a solar light for the flag. Troop 77 Scouts also pressure washed, cleaned and leveled multiple concrete benches that were in disrepair, as well as laying pine straw around the flagpole and trees in the front of the cemetery.

During the ceremony, Russell expressed his gratitude to the Scouts and adult leaders of Troop 77, the multitude of local small businesses in Enterprise that generously provided support for his service project, and his family, who stood by him during his Scouting journey.

Being part of a military family moving often across the country, Russell has had a unique trail to Eagle. He has been in three Cub Scout Packs and five Troops during his Scouting career, in multiple states from Kansas, Texas, to Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington.

Russell earned 26 merit badges, with one Eagle palm. Each palm signifies a scout earning five merit badges above the required 21 to earn the Eagle Scout rank. Selected by his peers, Russell was also inducted to the Order of the Arrow and completed a National Youth Leadership Training Course in Tacoma, Wash.

The rank of Eagle is earned by less than 5 percent of all Scouts who join Scouting. Russell follows his father, Col. Hegar and uncle, James W. Hegar of Dallas, Tx, in earning their Eagle Scout. Russell is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Vickers of Enterprise, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hegar III of San Antonio, Texas, and the great-grandson of Marilyn Hegar of Katy, Texas.

Russell will begin his senior year at Enterprise High School this fall.
