Hurricane Ian is moving to the north-northwest at 13 mph with winds in excess of 85 mph. It will continue to intensify rapidly today and into Tuesday. Ian is expected to be a major hurricane (Cat 3- 120 mph winds) in the Southern Gulf of Mexico by tomorrow morning and a Cat 4 (140 mph winds) by Tuesday afternoon. It is then expected to slow its forward progression eventually only moving at 5 mph as it tracks north.
According to Coffee County EMA Director James Brown, It cannot be overstated that there remains a lot of uncertainty in the 3 to 5 day forecast. Even so, Ian is expected to be a large storm, and impacts will be felt well outside the forecast cone.
The potential continues for significant impacts for coastal areas of the Florida Big Bend, though the eventual track of Ian will greatly influence impacts from wind, rainfall and storm surge.
“If this storm tracks further West it could have more impact on us,” said Brown. “However, if it maintains the current track, rain and winds would be minimal for our county.”
