The Coffee County Board of Education met Thursday, May 26, and approved Jared Robison as the probationary principal at Zion Chapel School. Robison is currently the assistant principal at New Brockton Elementary.
He will be in his 10th year as a member of the Coffee County School System having served as a coach and social studies teacher previously at Zion Chapel. Robison has a master’s degree in instructional leadership from the University of West Alabama and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama Huntsville in history. He is a graduate of Ardmore High School.
Superintendent Kelly Cobb recognized the spotlight teacher for the fourth quarter, Larry Crosby of Kinston School and the support employee for the quarter, Stacey Austin, who is the SRO at New Brockton Elementary School.
Board member Sherry Eddins asked about safety procedures at the county schools following the shooting at an elementary school in Texas last week. Cobb stated that most of the classrooms stay locked and have to be opened from the inside. In addition, there are security entry points at all the front doors and School Resource Officers at the schools.
“One of the most valuable resources we have are the SROs on our campuses and what they do every day to monitor that safety,” Cobb said.
In the new elementary wing and the new middle school being constructed, there are extra safety components built in as well as serving as a storm shelter.
“There is a safety plan at each school and the teachers (and administrators) train on those,” said Cobb. “The SROs work with teachers every year on safety protocols on what to do if we had an active shooter. We’ve done drills with EMA and outside agencies. This summer we’re meeting with safety teams, our safety coordinator and administrators that are trained to see what other things we need to continue with.”
