Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Monday, Oct. 25, that she had signed an executive order to “fight the overreaching COVID-19 vaccine mandates from the federal government.”
U.S. President Joe Biden recently issued a federal mandate that requires federal employees to be vaccinated as well as employees of businesses with over 100 employees.
Executive Order 724 states that the Alabama Attorney General will bring litigation from the state to challenge any federally imposed COVID-19 vaccination requirements. It also states that no state agency, department, board or commission can impose a penalty on any business for noncompliance of the federal mandate.
Ivey has strongly supported vaccines and has gone as far as to publicly criticize those that continue to refuse to get vaccinated amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, but says that she strongly opposes any government mandates to be vaccinated.
“The federal government’s outrageous overreach has simply given us no other option, but to begin taking action, which is why I am issuing this executive order to fight these egregious COVID-19 vaccine mandates,” Ivey said. “Alabamians – and Americans alike – should and must have the choice to roll up their sleeves to get this shot and certainly not forced by government. While President Biden laughs at the idea of protecting your freedoms, I will continue fighting for Alabama businesses and their employees.”
