The Coffee County Schools Board of Education unanimously voted to name Kelly Cobb as the school’s newest superintendent.
Cobb – the current Coffee County Schools Federal Programs Coordinator – was selected over Coffee County Schools Special Programs Coordinator Gray Harrison, Guntersville City Schools Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Jones and Piedmont High School Principal Dr. Adam Clemons.
“I thought we had four quality candidates,” Coffee County Board of Education President Brian McLeod said. “I was really impressed with the finalists. They came to the interviews well prepared and we learned a lot about them. Whether they were already in our system or from outside the system, we learned something from each candidate. It has been a very informative process.”
Cobb is not only a lifelong Coffee County Schools employee but she is also a product of Coffee County Schools, having graduated from New Brockton High School. Following her graduation from college, Cobb has been an elementary school teacher and reading coach at Zion Chapel, a reading coach at Kinston, assistant principal at Zion Chapel and principal at New Brockton Elementary before moving into the central office in 2015. She’s also led a number of different committees.
“We had some wonderful, wonderful interviews and it wasn’t an easy decision at all,” board member Wendy Massey said. “We had one – well, really two (candidates) – that stood out and it was a really hard decision that took a lot of prayer. I know I prayed a lot and all of us did.”
Massey made a motion to name Cobb the new superintendent – pending contract negotiations – and board Vice President Galen McWaters seconded the motion. The board unanimously voted to make Cobb the superintendent.
Board member Mike Bailey made a motion to form a committee of three board members to negotiate Cobb’s contract directly for her and it was unanimously passed, as well. Bailey, McLeod and Sherry Eddins will serve as the committee who negotiate the contract and bring the contract back to the board to be voted on.
In other business, the school board unanimously approved a number of other personnel actions.
