Enterprise native Katie Britt made history in the state of Alabama Tuesday, June 21, as the first woman and first Wiregrass native to win a primary for the U.S. Senate.
Britt outpaced opponent Mo Brooks 65 percent to 35 percent in the runoff to earn the right to be on the General Election ballot in November as the Republican nominee. She will face off against Democratic nominee Will Boyd. Brooks conceded the race just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Britt received 80 percent of the vote in Coffee County, her home county, to Brooks 20 percent. She roared through the Wiregrass with 79 percent of the vote in Dale County to 21 percent for Brooks; 80 percent of the vote in Houston County to Brooks 20 percent; 83 percent of the vote in Henry County to Brooks 16 percent; 81 percent of the votes in Geneva County to Brooks 19 percent; and 80 percent of the vote in Covington County to Brooks 20 percent.
In other Republican primary runoff races, Wes Allen defeated Jim Zeigler 64 percent to 36 percent for the office of Secretary of State, Andrew Sorrell beat Stan Cooke 59 percent to 41 percent for the office of State Auditor, Jeremy Oden outpaced Brent Woodall 52 percent to 48 percent for Public Service Commission Place 1 and Chip Beeker defeated Robert McCollum 62 percent to 38 percent for Public Service Commission Place 2.
In the Democratic primary runoff for governor, Yolana Rochelle Flowers beat Malika Sanders Fortier 55 percent to 45 percent. Flowers will now face Republican incumbent Kay Ivey in the General Election in November.
