The Vivian B. Adams School opened its doors 50 years ago to provide opportunities to individuals with special needs.

The school, located on Stuart Tarter Road in Ozark, currently serves the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities ranging in age from three to 84 from Barbour, Coffee, Dale, Henry, Houston and Pike Counties in Southeast Alabama.

“When you focus on possibilities, you discover opportunities,” said VBAS Director Hannah A. Parker. “At Vivian B. Adams School our people’s possibilities are limitless.”

Events planned throughout the year for the school established in 1971 include:

• A “Drive Through Special Needs Resource Fair” Wednesday, March 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Thursday, April 1, from 3 until 6 p.m. on the VBAS campus. Families and caregivers can pick up a free bag of 50 local, state and national resources, available services and tips to help serve their individuals with special needs. To reserve a resource bag, please call or text (334)618-5189 or email [email protected].

• Custom designed long sleeved and short sleeved commemorative T-shirts will be available to the community.

• Media articles and social media posts will share “50 Reasons Why…” highlighting VBAS history, staff, students, community and business supporters and how and why they make VBAS a premier and prestigious program.

• A VBAS student art display created through the HeArt (Helping encourage Artistic expression to reinforce and transform) Program will be held at the Rudd Center in downtown Ozark Oct. 4-23.

• Beginning May 1, commemorative personalized brick pavers will be for sale and used to update the front memorial garden.

The individuals, staff and families associated with VBAS invite the public to join them this year to, “Honor the past, respect the present, and envision the future” as they move into the next 50 years.

“The school stands as a strong beacon of hope for individuals with special needs and is looking forward to a bright future,” Parker said.
