An Ozark man is in Dale County jail after the traffic death of a woman at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.
Michael Smith, 30, is charged with murder and attempted murder, according to Dale County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mason Bynum.
Bynum said that the name of the dead woman is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
Bynum said that the Ozark-Dale County E911 Center received a report of a possible road rage incident in progress on Lakeview Road in Ozark at about 11:30 p.m.
“The vehicles reportedly traveled down several roads before turning south on Highway 231 in Newton,” Bynum said. “As the vehicles traveled southbound the suspect’s vehicle forced the victim’s vehicle off the roadway causing it to overturn multiple times.
“A female occupant in the vehicle was ejected and pronounced deceased on the scene,” he added. “This is an ongoing investigation but based on preliminary information we believe this is domestic related.”
Smith surrendered to Dale County Sheriff’s Department Investigators early Nov. 20 and is currently being held in the Dale County Jail pending a first court appearance.
Bynum said that the Ozark Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division, Newton Fire Department, Midland City Police and Fire Departments, South Dale EMS, the Pinckard Fire Department, the State Bureau of Investigations and the Alabama Department of Transportation assisted in the investigation.
