The New Brockton Gamecocks ended their season Friday, Feb. 10, in the area tournament championship with a 61-33 loss to the Opp Bobcats.
The Gamecocks started off slow scoring only 4 points in the first period to the Bobcats 12 but picked up momentum in the second period scoring 17 points. However, Opp put 20 points on the board to lead at the half 32-21.
New Brockton never could get going after the half and was outscored 29-12 for the final score of 61-33 in favor of Opp.
Anthony Silar led the Gamecocks with 20 points. New Brockton finished the season 8-14.
New Brockton opened the tournament with a 66-61 win over Pike County on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
The Gamecocks matched baskets with the Bulldogs in the first period 10-10 but Pike County pulled ahead with 19 points in the second period to New Brockton’s 16 points. The Bulldogs took a 29-26 lead into halftime.
New Brockton came out swinging in the second half and outscored Pike County 40-32 for the final score of 66-61 in favor of the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks were led by Matt Smith with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks. He was followed by Silar, who also had 23 points, 2 rebounds and 3 blocks. Baylon Foster was the only other player in double figures with 12 points but he had 2 steals with the most important one coming in the last 10 seconds of the game to seal the win for the Gamecocks with a layup.
