The New Brockton Gamecocks have been working hard in spring practice preparing for a spring game against Goshen that will take place Friday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in Gamecock Stadium.
The varsity returns over 48 players in grades 9-12 and over 50 seventh and eighth graders have been going through spring training for head coach Zack Holmes. The Gamecocks will be looking to improve on a 4-6 record in 2021 plus find a starting quarterback with the graduation of Kaden Cupp, who will be playing at Troy University next season.
“It’s cool we’ve got over 100 kids out there,” said Holmes. “It’s the first year we’ve had a junior high program and they’re separate from the varsity with their own coaching staff. The numbers are really good which is a benefit of a growing school. It’s going really well.”
New Brockton just began spring workouts last week. Tuesday, May 3, was the first full day in pads.
“I thought we responded well to the heat. It was warm out there,” said Holmes. “It was hot and humid out there and they handled that better than I expected.
“Our competitiveness was really good. Our program is big enough it has gotten to the point where we have two different teams so they’re competing against each other all through the spring so the competitive drive is really good, too,” Holmes said.
Losing Cupp will be a huge factor in the success of the Gamecock program this fall.
“He’s a special young man and not with just his ability and what he did on the field. He holds the record here for career offensive yards but his leadership in the locker room is going to be missed, too,” Holmes said. “But the cool thing about great leaders is they usually train up leaders so he has done a good job of trying to show the guys what you need to do moving forward.”
There are five quarterbacks in grades 9-12 competing for the job and they will all play in the spring game.
“As we go through the summer, we’ll figure out who it’s (the starter) going to be,” said Holmes.
