The Enterprise State Community College Boll Weevils opened the baseball season on the road Feb. 9 in a high scoring affair with a 16-12 win over Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Fla.
The Weevils opened the scoring in the top of the first inning going up 1-0 before the Commodores jumped out to a 3-1 advantage after the first inning. ESCC went back ahead 4-3 in the top of the second and then 5-3 in the third before Gulf Coast plated six runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 9-5.
The Weevils went back ahead 15-11 after six innings with each team scoring one more run in the last three innings for the final score of 16-12.
ESCC had 14 hits on the day. Weevils leading the hit parade included Micah McLeod who was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and a home run, Joey Garrett was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, Cam Williams was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Brady Peddie was 2 for 5 with one run scored, Mac Danford was 1 for 3 with one run scored and Caden Slappey was 1 for 4 with two runs scored.
Former Enterprise Wildcat Logan Fleming got the win for the Weevils. He gave up one hit and two runs with four strikeouts and three walks in 3.1 innings of work. Bryce Stephens recorded two hits and one run with one strikeout and one walk in three innings.
ESCC will participate in the Hits for Heroes against Wallace Community College at 9 a.m. and Snead State at 3 p.m. at Westgate Park on Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. against Wallace, also part of the Hits for Heroes. The Weevils home opener will be Tuesday, Feb. 22 against Gulf Coast with first pitch at 1 p.m.
