The Enterprise High School boys golf team advanced to sub-state play after finishing second in the sectional tournament in Phenix City at Lakewood Golf Course on Monday.
Auburn won the sectional with a score of 299 followed by Enterprise with a 304.
Nick Cook led the Cats with a 73, Jon Ed Steed shot a 74, Jackson Bailey shot a 78, Hunter McCarty finished with a 79 and Gibson Charlton had an 83.
Sub-state play will take place at Moore’s Mill in Auburn on May 2.
“ The team did what they had to do today to advance to sub-state play next Monday,” said head golf coach Rex Bynum. “Hunter McCarty’s best round in tournament action was a big boost for him and the team. Gibby Charlton had a tough day but Hunter’s 79 along with the other scores in the 70s propelled the team to its second place finish.
“We need to be at our best next Monday to have a chance to advance to the state tournament.”
The Cats ended the regular season on Tuesday, April 19, with a third place finish in the two-day Bert McGriff Memorial Tournament played at Cross Creek and Teri Pines in Cullman. Cullman won the tournament with a 604, Vestavia Hills finished second with a 615, Enterprise was third with a 622, Athens was fourth with a 625 and Huntsville finished fifth with a 636 to round out the top five teams.
Scores for the EHS golfers included Steed tied for eighth with a 71-80, Charlton tied for 16th with a 75-81, Cook tied for 16th with a 79-77, Bailey finished 21st with an 82-77 and McCarty finished 59th with an 88-93. There were 95 players in the field.
“I was pleased overall with our play in Cullman,” Bynum said. “Conditions were brutal on Monday at Cross Creek and there was no warmup due to the range being too wet. Jon Ed and Gibby posted good scores despite the conditions.
“The weather was better Tuesday, even though the start was cold and windy. Nick and Jackson posted good scores in that second round,” Bynum said.
