On Nov. 17, Enterprise State Community College landed a hometown kid when Enterprise High School senior baseball player Will Powell signed his letter-of-intent with the school.
Powell selected Enterprise State over other offers from schools like Coastal Alabama-South and Wallace-Hanceville.
“It felt most comfortable for me, it felt like home,” Powell said of ESCC. “I felt like I would be able to produce there and I like Coach (Bubba) Frichter a lot, too.”
Powell said that finding the school and coaches he believed could help him advance to the next step in his career – a scholarship at a four-year college – was a big factor in his decision.
“My goal with this decision was to make a decision on what coach would help me best and which coach I would fit best with and that would be able to help me progress my skills to get me to that next level,” Powell said. “I felt like Coach Frichter was that coach for me.”
Powell said he plans to earn his licensed practical nursing degree at ESCC and a registered nurse’s bachelor’s degree at a four-year college in the future. Before that, however, he has his mind on his senior season.
“My goal is to step up and be that senior role model for my team and be a leader on and off the field,” Powell said. “Also, a state championship. That’s the goal.”
Powell said that EHS coach Matt Whitton has meant a lot in his college search but also to his high school career as a whole.
“Coach Whitt has mean t a lot to me,” he said. “He’s helped me a lot, especially these last couple of months with getting me workouts with schools and everything to allow me to be able to have this opportunity. He’s also been a coach I can look up to.”
As a junior, Powell boasted a .285 batting average with seven doubles, one home run, 25 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. In high school he’s played first base, in the outfield and will pitch this season. He said that ESCC plans to use him at first base and pitcher.
