Level Plains Police Chief Lanice Bonds turned in a letter of resignation during an April 1 city council meeting.

The letter indicated his resignation would be effective April 1.

The city is currently taking applications for the position.

A committee was formed consisting of Level Plains Mayor Bruce Grantham and councilmembers Edward Berry and Gregory Eldridge, who will review the applicants and select the top three candidates to present to the council.

Officer Johnny Williams, who was recently promoted from lieutenant to captain will serve as the interim police chief until the council selects a candidate.

In other news, discussion continued about the city's desire to have its own zip code.

A letter of recommendation has been sent from the Dale County Commission to the state endorsing the request.

Councilmembers also discussed plans to build a council chamber onto the existing city hall building on Joe Bruer Road.

The project would be funded through the city's capital improvements fund.

The next city council meeting is at 6 p.m., April 15, at the Level Plains Community Room.
