There are less than 300 days until the city of Level Plains celebrates its 50th anniversary but plans are underway, and hopes are that the municipality will have its own zip code by then.
At a Level Plains City Council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 5, councilman James Bullinger reported that plans are underway for the city’s 50th anniversary celebration—set for May 2, 2015— and that following the November elections, “Save the Date” notices will be sent to elected officials.
Bullinger also reported on the status of the city’s request to establish their own postal code. Presently some Level Plains residents have Enterprise zip codes and some have Daleville ones. The city has been dialoguing with the United States Postal Service about obtaining their own zip code because splitting its mailing addresses causes both the city of Level Plains and Dale County to lose tax revenue.
The city had been asked to provide a list of all addresses in the designated area, to include street names, addresses and block ranges as part of the U.S.P.S. review process. The information was to be presented on a 1-to-1,000-scale map, and that map is now ready, Bullinger told the council.
Because some 60 percent of Level Plains is already served through the Daleville Post Office, the Daleville postmaster has said his office could handle distribution of Level Plains residents if a separate postal code were established, Bullinger said.
U.S. Rep. Martha Roby’s office, the Dale County Commission and the Dale County E-911 Board have sent letters of support to the postal service on behalf of Level Plains’ request, Bullinger said
Mayor Bruce Grantham thanked Bullinger for spearheading the project and said he would review the packet and send it forward.
