The city of Level Plains has plans to apply for two grants that will provide needed water system improvements.
During a June 3 meeting, the council approved a resolution to apply for a Community Development Block Grant to complete drainage improvements on A and B streets.
Mayor Bruce Grantham said these streets have an issue with standing water after heavy rains and the grant is a solution.
If approved, the grant will provide $103,000 for the project and will require an $11,000 match from the city, making the total project cost $114,000.
Matching funds will come from the water department's future growth fund.
The city is working with the Dale County Commission on the application for a second CDBG grant worth $383,000, including a $35,000 match from Level Plains.
If approved, the funds will be used to make water line upgrades and provide for the installation of additional fire hydrants.
The Level Plains matching portion will also come from the city's future growth fund.
In other news, councilmembers approved the promotion of police officer Cpl. Billy Driggers to sergeant.
The next Level Plains City Council meeting is at 6 p.m., June 17, at the Level Plains Community Center.
