The Level Plains Fire Department responded to a call May 14 of a structure fire on Merriweather Road at about 3 p.m.

When fire officials arrived on scene, a duplex named Lipsey Apartments had smoke billowing from the structure.

Assistant Level Plains Fire Chief Stanley Gatlin said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Gatlin said a woman was home asleep at the time the fire started.

Gatlin said the resident woke up smelling smoke, which she saw coming from behind the stove and refrigerator area.

The resident was able to get out of the residence unharmed and went to a neighbor's home.

The Enterprise Fire Department provided assistance with extinguishing the fire.
