The Coffee County Board of Education approved at the Nov. 4 meeting the proposal of a new county school district map that will be voted on for final approval later this month.

The new map, which can be viewed on the school board’s website or at https://tinyurl.com/ma8d72nv, has only slight changes of the district lines but also remedies an issue that would have resulted in two board members being in the same district had the board adopted the map the County Commission was looking at.

The board unanimously approved this new map to be the proposed new map but a second board meeting will be held later this month – which has not been announced yet – where the board will vote on whether to officially adopt it or not. Public opinion will be allowed at that board meeting.

The board also heard a proposal for new classroom additions at both New Brockton Elementary School and New Brockton High School. The new classrooms at NBHS would add a new wing onto the building that is currently under construction. That new wing would be a new middle school and would feature six new classrooms, an English Language room, a special needs room and offices. The new additions at New Brockton Elementary would be six new classrooms. Also, the construction would include additional parking and car drives at both schools. The total cost of the construction is estimated at $6,708,840. The board unanimously approved a motion to accept bids for this new construction project.

The board also unanimously approved a request from superintendent Kelly Cobb to allocate $44,000 of county school funds to the various athletic programs and band programs at each county school due to revenue losses those programs suffered during COVID-19. Cobb said it’s estimated that those programs at New Brockton, Zion Chapel and Kinston suffered more than double that total amount of losses due to seating capacity limits and other factors in 2020.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of three new school buses for the school system. These buses are budgeted items.

The board also selected current Board President Bryan McLeod to continue serving as president and board member Mike Bailey to serve as vice president for the next year.

The board also approved the following personnel items.

Dawn Nolin, teacher, New Brockton Elementary;

Ashley Sanders, EL teacher, New Brockton Elementary;
