COVID 19

On Jan. 8, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) announced that the ADPH would provide COVID-19 vaccinations for people over 75 years old and first responders by appointment effective Jan. 18.

According to a release from the Governor’s Office, anyone over the age of 75 and first responders, including law enforcement and firefighters, statewide will be able to get the vaccination through ADPH by appointment starting Jan. 18. Appointments will be first come, first serve at select locations across the state.

“I appreciate the swift work of ADPH to establish a system to efficiently provide our limited resources of vaccine to as many Alabamians as possible,” Ivey said. “We have previously worked to provide vaccines to our healthcare workers who are on the front lines of the pandemic, and now, are diligently working to expand access to our seniors, law enforcement officers and various members of our first responders.

“It is critical for everyone to remain patient; demand is high, and supply is low. ADPH and their partners are working around-the-clock to assist as many people as they can.”

To schedule an appointment for the free COVID-19 vaccination, call the ADPH toll-free number at 1-855-566-5333. The phone line is open every day of the week from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The ADPH received more than 1 million calls in the first 24 hours of the phone line going live. ADPH is emphasizing that only people that qualifying to receive the vaccine at this point call to make an appointment. Those people that qualify for the vaccine include are healthcare workers, first responders including law enforcement and firefighters and people over the age of 75.

Also, ADPH urges residents to not call local hospitals in an attempt to make COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Hospital switchboards all over the state have been overwhelmed, which can create an obstacle for hospitals in regards to patient care.

Anyone that wishes to receive general information on COIVD-19 or the vaccine can call 1-800-270-7268.
