At the Nov. 8 Coffee County Commission meeting, the commission recognized a longtime county employee who is retiring this month and also signed a proclamation recognizing Farm City Week for later this month.
Coffee County Human Resource Director Sharon Mixon will be retiring later this month after more than 30 years of service with the county. The commission presented Mixon with an award recognizing her 30 years of service and each commissioner thanked her for service.
“She has been a steadfast presence in the commission’s office throughout her tenure,” Chairman Dean Smith said. “The commission – along with her friends, colleagues and family – thank and recognize Sharon for her many years of service to Coffee County.
“The County Commission hereby expresses its deep gratitude to Sharon and calls on our citizens to join in thanking her for her many years of dedicated service.”
The commission also signed a proclamation, along with New Brockton Mayor Kathy Holley and Enterprise Mayor William Cooper, recognizing the week of Nov. 19-25 as Coffee County Farm City Week.
“I call upon the citizens in rural (areas) and cities alike to join in recognizing the accomplishments of our productive farmers and our urban residents who cooperate to help create an abundance of wealth and strength in our nation,” Smith said.
The commission also unanimously selected Smith to continue serving as Commission Chairman for another year.
In other business, the commission approved a request to surplus a number of pistols from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office to then trade in for upgraded pistols. Also, the commission adopted the Southeast Alabama Regional Hazard Mitigation plan for the next year.
The commission also waved the use fee for the Coffee County Farm Center for the upcoming award’s banquet for the New Brockton Youth Sports Association.
County Environmental Services Director Mike Thornton said that this week’s county trash pickup would not change due to Veteran’s Day.
Holley announced that New Brockton’s annual Christmas parade would be held on Dec. 4 beginning at 11 a.m. in downtown New Brockton.
