During a May 13 meeting, the Coffee County Commission approved County Engineer Randy Tindell’s request to submit County Roads 235 and 224 for a change in highway classification.
If approved as either a minor or major connector, the roads would then be approved to receive federal funding which could be used for resurfacing and maintenance.
According to Tindell, the frequently-used roads connect the Zion Chapel area of Northern Coffee County to the New Brockton and Enterprise areas.
Tindell was also given permission to purchase three additional tractors with boom cutting attachments for $47,000 apiece.
These are identical to a tractor purchased by the Coffee County Highway Department in April.
The purchase will give the county four identical tractors and free up three older tractors, which would then be eligible for sale.
The Highway Department was also given permission to begin several resurfacing projects including: County Road 106, the parking lot surrounding the commission office and the substation at the county’s tire recycling center on Highway 125 in Elba.
The commission also agreed to enter into an agreement with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for the roadside pickup of illegally dumped tires.
The contract is similar to ones agreed to in previous years, and will be effective for a period of three years.
In other news, commissioners accepted a $33,075 from Thompson Tractor for the repair of a county-owned bulldozier.
Of the two bids submitted, Thompson’s was the lowest and will include both parts and labor.
Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton also gave a brief statement thanking the several agencies that assisted in the safe handling of a potential bomb threat in the Covington County area May 9.
Sutton thanked the Coffee County Emergency Agency, Department of Homeland Security, The Houston County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Andy Hughes, which were a few of the agencies involved in last week’s multi-county investigation.
Commissioners also proclaimed May 13-19 as National Police Week in Coffee County, asking the public to remember the duties, responsibilities and sacrifices members of the local law enforcement must make in order to safeguard the lives and property of the residents of Coffee County.
The county will present a special Fallen Officers Memorial program for local officers who lost their lives during the performance of their duty at 2 p.m., May 15, at the Coffee County Courthouse in Elba.
The Coffee County Commission has rescheduled its next meeting from Memorial Day, May 27, to 9 a.m., May 23, at the Coffee County Complex in New Brockton.
