The Coffee County Commission unanimously agreed to enter into a contract with Enterprise State Community College (ESCC) during an April 8 meeting for the purpose of utilizing ESCC’s internship programs.

According to Coffee County IT and Data Processing Director Frank Eason, students in ESCC’s computer science programs will soon have the opportunity to gain on-the-job experience with Coffee County’s information technology, engineering and environmental departments.

“Like a doctor’s (residency), these students will spend a certain amount of time interning in their fields and it doesn’t cost the person they are working for a thing,” Eason said. “It gives them the experience of being on the job.”

Eason said the program would give students a practical application of the skills they are learning at ESCC.

“This is a work force development tool,” Eason said. “This is (beneficial) not only for ourselves, but for our future, because we’re investing in it.”

In other news, commissioners agreed to enter into a contract with Syscon Technology Solutions regarding the electronic recording of documents.

At the request of Coffee County Probate Judge Steve Blair, the contract, which comes at no cost to the county, was approved.

“With this program, (someone) can send a document to either courthouse and the submitter pays all the fees electronically,” Blair said. “Once we accept (the transfer), it automatically debits the account of the submitter and the money is received almost instantaneously.”

Blair said court documents, loan closures and any other important documents could be quickly transferred and safely stored using the new system.

Commissioners also accepted more than $2,000 in combined bids for paper, janitorial supplies and food services from COPACO of Columbus, Ga.

COPACO is the county’s current provider for these services.

In other business, Coffee County Extension Agent David Garrett addressed the commission to announce the upcoming Senior Citizen Prom, sponsored by the Coffee County Extension Office and 4-H.

The prom, which is Mardi Gras themed, will be hosted at 5:30 p.m., April 25, at the New Brockton Farm Center.

The annual senior outreach program features free food, fun, fellowship, entertainment and more.

Those interested in attending can call the Extension office at 894-5596 for more information and must RSVP by April 22.

The Coffee County Commission will meet again at 9 a.m., April 22, in the community room at the Coffee County Complex.

Other actions taken by the commission:

  • Approved $25,177 for the purchase of the 12-passenger van through statewide bids. The Coffee County Extension Office will primarily be using the van.
  • Approved $1,500 for the purchase of a water tanker trailer to be used by the Coffee County Engineer Department.
