The Coffee County Commission approved a motion to open the Coffee County Landfill from 8 a.m. till noon on Saturdays.

The request came from County Engineer Randy Tindell during a regular meeting Feb. 25.

Tindell said the county’s new contract with K&W Plastics would require the landfill to operate on Saturdays. The county will be disposing of waste from K&W’s recycling division beginning in March.

Commissioners also announced the county’s tire processing center is open and accepting tires, though an official opening ceremony won’t take place until March.

Located on Highway 125 just north of Elba, the tire center is currently accepting passenger tires for 75 cents each.

Prices for larger tires, such as construction or tractor tires, will be determined on site.

Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton also addressed the commission to discuss Alabama House Bill 55 and Senate Bill 129, which deal with issuing concealed weapon permits.

Sutton said, if passed, the bills would make it easier for Alabama residents with histories of mental illness and violence to purchase firearms.

The Alabama Sheriff’s Association (ASA) claims the bill will create unreasonable penalties for public officials attempting to perform their duties and could also take away the rights of property owners to control their private property or place of business.

Sutton said the Coffee County Sheriffs Department is opposed to the bill, which the ASA has publicly condemned.

In other news, commissioners also approved a request from Kevin Bond, pastor of the Refuge Church in Enterprise, giving the church permission to use the New Brockton Farm Center March 8-9 for a youth rally.

Commissioner Dean Smith also cautioned Coffee County residents about mud riding following Monday and Tuesday’s heavy rains.

Smith said rainfall totals were high and urged motorists to use caution when traveling on low-lying or dirt roads.

The Coffee County Commission will meet again at 9 a.m., March 11, at the Coffee County Complex in New Brockton.
