The Daleville Warhawks opened area tournament play Tuesday, Feb. 8, with a win over Slocomb to advance to the next round of the tournament but fell to Houston Academy 49-40 on Thursday, Feb. 10.
Daleville opened the first period in a big way going up 16-10 over Houston Academy before they were throttled by the Raiders in the second period scoring only 2 points to HA’s 16. The Raiders led 26-18 at the half.
The Warhawks once again came out strong in the second half scoring 11 points each in the third and fourth periods but it wasn’t enough to overcome the poor showing in the second period. HA scored 10 points in the third period and 13 points in the fourth period for the final score of 49-40.
Sophomore Moses McDowell led the Warhawks in scoring with 16 points. He was followed by seniors Bryan Beckwith with 12 points and Jayson Ayala with 8 points. Jeremiah Moore finished the scoring with 4 points.
Houston Academy faced Wicksburg Saturday night to determine the area champion and which team would move on to the regional tournament. Daleville finished the season 2-16.
Daleville began the area tournament with a 56-48 win over the Slocomb Red Tops.
The Warhawks fell behind 15-7 at the end of the first period but matched Slocomb in the second period with 13 points each. The Red Tops led at the half 28-20.
Daleville began the second half scoring 15 points to Slocomb’s 10 points in the third period then outscored the Red Tops again in the fourth period 21-10 for the final score of 56-48.
The Warhawks never got in foul trouble during the game, committing only three fouls in the first half to Slocomb’s eight. In the second half, Daleville had seven team fouls to Slocomb’s 10.
McDowell once again led the Warhawks with 28 points followed by Beckwith with 13 points.
