The Daleville Warhawks traveled to Hartford Friday, May 13, to take on the Geneva County Bulldogs in a Spring Game and came away 8-6 winners after a rain-shortened contest.
Only 46 plays were run in the first half between the two varsity squads before a deluge began and lightning ended the game. There was no kicking in the contest nor did the scoreboard work so spectators were kept abreast of the time and yardage by the stadium announcer.
Geneva County started the contest with a 12-play drive that ended when Jeremy Barber slapped down a pitch out in mid air by the Bulldog quarterback and the ball was recovered by Daleville. The Warhawks then proceeded to march down the field and scored a touchdown seven plays later on a 30-yard run by Omarion Pinckney. The two-point conversion by Anthony Wynn was good and Daleville led 8-0.
Geneva County then started on its own 30-yard line and turned the ball over after three plays on fourth down when Ruben Garcia got a stop for Daleville.
The second quarter began with the Warhawks at their own 40-yard line. After seven plays, Daleville turned the ball over on downs after a pass by Pinckney was batted down while he was trying to pick up the first down.
The Bulldogs followed with a 10-play drive to score a touchdown in the pouring rain but failed on the two-point conversion when Warhawk Jeremiah Moore came up the middle and dropped the Bulldog runner short of the goal line.
Wynn and Pinckney were the workhorses for Daleville’s offense. Pinckney was 0-1 passing and had eight rushes for 71 yards. Wynn rushed nine times for 35 yards. Daleville had a total of 116 yards in offense during the game.
“Friday night was a positive step in the right direction for our program,” said head coach Will Garner. “Our kids got to taste a little bit of success which will be a huge validation for us building and leading into the summer and the fall.
“We competed and played well against a good Geneva County team and it just shows our guys the work they’re putting in is leading everything in the right direction. Now it’s just time to work and get better.”
Daleville will open the season Aug. 19 at Goshen.
